The Boy's Life（1993）

This story is set in 1950s in the United States and depicts the growth of Toby, a bad boy. 

One day, Toby's mother Caroline, who had no luck with men, met a gentlemanly man Dwight. Then they were attracted to each other and married.

However, Dwight was only a superficial gentleman. He hated the bad boy Toby. To rehabilitate Toby, Dwight enrolled him in the Boy Scouts and gave him a job delivering newspapers. Dwight gradually became violent with Toby. Toby continued to bear this hard life with violent Dwight. How will Toby escape Dwight?

This movie was directed by Michael Caton-Jones in 1993. Toby was played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Dwight by Robert De Niro. This is based on a true story. It is based on the autobiographical novel by Tobias Wolff.

I was moved by Toby's courageous action to escape Dwight. The violent scenes were realistic and painful to watch because Leo's acting was very good.

Catch Me If You Can（2002）

This is a story of a genius boy swindler. High school student Frank Abagnale left home because his parents divorced. But he only had a check account. One day, Frank thought of a good idea. Then he started a forge checks to get money.

Frank flew around the world pretending to be a pilot. He repeatedly forged checks in each place. He also pretended to be a doctor. At last, Frank's fraud the amount of damage exceeded four million dollars. FBI agent Carl Hanratty tried to stop this fraud and kept chasing Frank. However, Frank was good at escaping so it was difficult to catch him. What will happen to Frank?

This movie was directed by Steven Spielberg in 2002. Frank was played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Carl by Tom Hanks. This is based on a true story in the 1960s. Frank Abagnale became famous as the youngest swindler. He was arrested at the age of 21 for repeated  identity fraud and check forgery fraud.

I can't believe that what happened in this movie is true. I was surprised of his bold fraud.  I thought Leo was the perfect for Frank's role. Leo in a pilot’s uniform is really cool. Don't Look Up（2021）

 

This is a story that may become a true story some day. One day, astronomer Randall Mindy and graduate student Kate Dibiasky discovered a huge comet. Dr. Mindy calculated the orbit and revealed that "The comet will collide with earth in about 6 months". In other words, it means the "extinction of human beings". 

Dr. Mindy and Kate try to stop this problem. They told the truth at the White House to President Aurian. But President Aurian was indifferent about it.  They also appeared on the morning TV program "The Daily Rip" and told the truth but to no effect. Nobody listened to the truth. What will happen to the fate of the earth?

This movie was directed by Adam Mckay. This is an American black comedy movie released on Netflix in 2021. Dr. Mindy was played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate by Jennifer Lawrence. At the 94th Academy Awards, this movie was nominated for 4 categories: work, script, editing, and composition. 

Leo is both an actor and an environmentalist, so he spoke about his fears of climate change through this movie. The story of this movie was pretty realistic. If the same problem happened in the real world, I probably couldn't believe it. It was about a serious problem but it was very interesting because it's a black comedy.

The Wolf Of Wall Street（2013）

The story is set in Wall Street in the late 1980s. This movie depicted Jordan Belfort's life. Jordan had no educational background, no connections and no experience, but he had ambition. Jordan started working at an investment bank on Wall Street at the age of 22. He won people's hearts with his novel ideas and skillful speaking, and made great achievements. 

After that at the age of 26, he founded a securities company and earned $49 million a year. Jordan began to be called "Wall Street's Wolf". Jordan was wasteful of money, so it became the talk of the street. But an unexpected tragedy struck him. What will be his fate?

This movie was directed by Martin Scorsese in 2013. Jordan was played by Leonardo DiCaprio. This movie is based on a true story. Jordan Belfort is a real person and still alive. I can't believe what happened in this movie is true. I like the scene of Jordan's speech. Leo's acting in this scene will attract everyone! ⇩ 

Gilbert Grape（1993）

This is a story about a certain family who lived in Iowa, USA. Gilbert worked at a small grocery store. He had never left town because he had to take care of his family. He had an intellectually disabled younger brother Ernie, a bulimic mother and two younger sisters. Gilbert was disgusted by this life.

Ernie climbed trees and ladders as soon as Gilbert takes his eyes off him. But Gilbert didn't scold Ernie. Because Gilbert was more reliable than anyone else to Ernie. One day, Gilbert met a woman traveling in a trailer. Her name was Becky. Gilbert was attracted to her lifestyle because she was traveling freely. As he talked to Becky, Gilbert began to reconsider his life.

This movie was directed by Lasse Hallstrom in 1993. Gilbert was played by Johnny Depp, Ernie by Leonardo DiCaprio and Becky by Juliette Lewis. Leo was nominated for "Best Supporting Actor Academy Award". I was attracted to his acting in this movie. His acting looked like a real disabled man. According to the Leo's fanbook, "He actually visited facilities for intellectually disabled children.". He was nineteen years old at the time. I was overwhelmed by his efforts.

 

The original title is "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". This doesn't mean「何を食べているの？」. This means 「何か心配事があるの？」. The original title also has a deep meaning. If you watch this movie, please pay attention to Leo's acting!

Revolutionary Road（2008）

This is a story about a certain couple who lived in Connecticut, USA in the 1950s. Frank Wheeler and April were married. They had two children and lived happily in a quiet residential quarter area. This quiet residential quarter area was called "Revolutionary Road".

On Frank's birthday, April told Frank that she wanted to move to Paris. Frank was a former soldier in Paris so he was fascinated by Paris. April wanted to be an actress. She said " I'll work. So Frank may do whatever he wants." They decided to move to Paris. One day, April became pregnant. They prepared to move to Paris, but they had a lot of problems. Then their feelings changed for each other, and quarrels between husband and wife increased. What will happen to their love?

This movie was directed by Sam　Mendes in 2008. Frank was played by Leonardo DiCaprio and April by Kate Winslet. As everyone know, they co-star in "Titanic". I love Titanic so I felt as if I were watching Jack and Rose. After watching this movie, I was made to think about what are dreams, family and relationships. Through this movie, I was taught that even if I have hope, not everything will go well. 

Leo and Kate are still best friends! Leo and Kate were nominated for the "Golden Globe Award" for this movie. Kate won the "Best Actress Award". Kate expressed her love and gratitude to Leo in her Golden Globe Speech in 2009. "People in my world and Leo, I'm so happy I can stand here and tell you how much I love you and how much I've loved you for 13 years." she said. During her speech, Leo threw a kiss to Kate. Do you know the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet? It's a classic play written by Shakespeare. But this movie isn't just Romeo and Juliet. It's written in a modern way. On Verona Beach, the Montagues and Capulets fought for many years. One day, Romeo of Montague secretly visited the Capulet costume party. Romeo met a beautiful girl wearing angel wings there. Her name was Juliet.  She was the daughter of Capulet, his enemy. But Romeo and Juliet fell in love each other at first sight. 

Juliet was engaged, but she decided to marry Romeo. They held a wedding ceremony in a church. But that night, Romeo killed Juliet's cousin and he was kicked out of Verona Beach. Romeo and Juliet were torn. What will happen to their love?

This movie was directed by Buzz Rahman in 1996. Romeo was played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Juliet by Claire Danes. Leo won the "Silver Bear Award" for this movie. There are several Romeo and Juliet movies, but I like this one because I like Leo. Romeo is wearing an aloha shirt in the movie. It's a very modern arrangement. I think the aloha shirt looks very nice on him. 

Also, this movie uses the same classical English lines as the original. For example...

Romeo "What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun."

Juliet "O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?"

I think these classic expressions are very beautiful. I was moved by their love when I saw the last scene. This movie taught me the greatness of love. If you want to know about their love, please watch this movie.
